Our story

Healey House is run by Hastings and Rother Voluntary Association for the Blind (HRVAB), a local charity founded in 1921 to support people who are blind or partially sighted in Hastings and Rother. More than a hundred years on, that work continues. Alongside Healey House, HRVAB runs day clubs at the John Taplin Centre and in Bexhill, offers advice and support to people with sight loss of all ages, and provides low vision support services for East Sussex County Council.

Healey House is the charity’s residential care home. Our expertise in sight loss shapes everything we do, from the lighting, contrast and signage around the home to the way our team communicates and guides. Today we welcome adults with a wide range of care needs, whether or not they have a visual impairment, and offer them a warm, homely place to live with a dedicated team on hand day and night.

“Our aim is simple: to offer a warm, safe and genuinely homely place where every resident is known, respected and supported to live the life they choose.”

Andrew Patmore, Chief Executive, HRVAB

Residents come first

Everything we do starts with the people who live here. Five values guide how we care for them every day.

  • Dignity Every resident is treated with respect, and their preferences, beliefs, history and identity are honoured.

  • Compassion We care with kindness, warmth and patience. Care is not just a task; it is a relationship.

  • Independence We support residents to do what they can for themselves, for as long as they can.

  • Honesty We are open about what we do well and what we are working to improve.

  • Partnership We work alongside residents, families and professionals. No one delivers good care alone.
